Camping can be a great way to get closer to your family and spend some quality time with the kids either at the weekend or for a standalone holiday.

What to Pack

There are certainly some essentials you will need to take with you on both a short and long camping trip.

Tent – this is advised even if you are camping in a hot country as you can never tell how cold it gets when the sun goes down and if it might rain suddenly.

Roll mats- unless you are prepared to carry around a self inflating mattress which can be quite heavy, you will need a roll mat to put your sleeping bag on to give you a bit more padding as the ground can be quite hard and uncomfortable to sleep on directly.

Sleeping Bag – these are very good at keeping you warm at night if you get one which is good quality as they zip up leaving you snug as a bug in a rug, and some even come with embedded pillows.

Waterproof Clothing – Even if the weather is supposed to be beautiful, you can never guarantee your clothes will not get damp, so in this case it is advised you carry some waterproof clothing with you just in case.

What to Eat

If you are just going camping for one night then you may be able to take quite a variety of foods with you as they should keep fresh until you come to cook them.

Disposable BBQs are always an easy option which you can cook meat or vegetable kebabs on, or if you really want to get into the camping mood you could try a small portable gas stove.

These camping friendly gas stoves are specially designed for outdoor use and can be really useful for warming up camping food like packaged stews and even tins of soups and baked beans.

You may want to carry a fair bit of water with you, depending on how far you have to walk as you never know if you will be close to somewhere which sells it.  Water can be used for drinking and washing up pots and pans, so it’s useful to keep on you.

Where to Pitch your Tent

If you are not going to a campsite then you need to consider a few things before pitching your tent in a random place.

You do not want to be too close to a road as the noise may distract your sleep and if there was an accident it could put you in danger.

Find a flat piece of land to pitch your tent on as if you are on a slope it will make it harder to get comfortable when lying down.

If it is likely to rain it could be a good idea to pitch your tent under some trees as these will protect you from some of the rain and wind.
